Summary of Luncheon

The short story “Luncheon” by William Summerset Maugham is actually an autobiographical one, Maugham experienced it himself when he was a struggling young writer. A lady who admired and flattered Maugham’s writings wanted to meet him at Foyot, a restaurant of French senators.
As a young man having no power of saying no to a woman, the writer had to accept the offer although the restaurant was beyond his means.

The meeting day arrived; the lady was neither attractive nor beautiful as the writer expected. She showcase her knowledge of art and music, but the writer was wondering what the bill would come as the lady ate a lot.
She is a lady of dual personality and irony is found in her character, she said, “I never eat anything for luncheon”, ” I never eat more than one thing for luncheon” but actually did the opposite and different types of foods one by one and left the writer penniless and restless.
Finally, after doing all the damages to the writer, she bade him away with humour.
After twenty years the writer saw the lady again and knew that she weighed 21 stone (294 pounds). Thus the writer had had his revenge at last by contributing to her weight gain. Thus the writer depicts that overeating is a bad habit and nobody should eat lavishly flattering others.
The story narrates the story of every young man who feels uncomfortable during this type of situation. Here the writer provides the example just. To say it more clearly, the writer exposes the fake modest eating habits, of the middle-class
people with a touch of humour. The modesty of the writer is
a fantastic one as he did not utter a single word of frustration because of the lady’s action and words The lesson that can be found in the humorous short story is that flattery and pride hamper the young man’s ability to be truthful with his guest.
Instead of explaining his financial situation, he allows her to continue to order expensive items from the menu.
